22 Now Alma said unto
him: This is the thing which I was about to explain. Now we see that Adam did fall by the
partaking of the forbidden fruit, according to the word of God; and thus we
see, that by his fall, all mankind became a lost and fallen people.
23 And now behold, I
say unto you that if it had been possible for Adam to have partaken of the
fruit of the tree of life at that time, there would have been no death, and the
word would have been void, making God a liar, for he said: If thou eat thou shalt
surely die.
24 And we see that
death comes upon mankind, yea, the death which has been spoken of by Amulek,
which is the temporal death; nevertheless there was a space granted unto man in
which he might repent; therefore this life became a probationary state; a time
to prepare to meet God; a time to prepare for that endless state which has been
spoken of by us, which is after the resurrection of the dead.
25 Now, if it had not been for the plan of
redemption, which was laid from the foundation of the world, there could have
been no resurrection of the dead; but there was a plan of redemption laid,
which shall bring to pass the resurrection of the dead, of which has been
spoken.
(Alma 12:22-25)
Alma responded to Antionah’s question about the fall.
He was about to continue talking about the fall when
questioned. He continued, explaining
Adam fell because he partook of the forbidden fruit.
“And
to bring about his eternal purposes in the end of man, after he had created our
first parents, and the beasts of the field and the fowls of the air, and in
fine, all things which are created, it must needs be that there was an
opposition; even the forbidden fruit in opposition to the tree of life; the one
being sweet and the other bitter. Wherefore, the Lord God gave unto man that he
should act for himself. Wherefore, man
could not act for himself save it should be that he was enticed by the one or
the other. And I, Lehi, according to the things which I have read, must needs
suppose that an angel of God, according to that which is written, had fallen
from heaven; wherefore, he became a devil, having sought that which was evil
before God. And because he had fallen from heaven, and had become miserable
forever, he sought also the misery of all mankind. Wherefore, he said unto Eve, yea, even that
old serpent, who is the devil, who is the father of all lies, wherefore he
said: Partake of the forbidden fruit, and ye shall not die, but ye shall be as
God, knowing good and evil. And after Adam and Eve had partaken of the
forbidden fruit they were driven out of the garden of Eden, to till the earth”
(2 Nephi 2:15-19).
At that point, all mankind became a lost and fallen people.
“For
they are carnal and devilish, and the devil has power over them; yea, even that
old serpent that did beguile our first parents, which was the cause of their
fall; which was the cause of all mankind becoming carnal, sensual, devilish,
knowing evil from good, subjecting themselves to the devil. Thus all mankind
were lost; and behold, they would have been endlessly lost were it not that God
redeemed his people from their lost and fallen state. But remember that he that
persists in his own carnal nature, and goes on in the ways of sin and rebellion
against God, remaineth in his fallen state and the devil hath all power over
him. Therefore, he is as though there
was no redemption made, being an enemy to God; and also is the devil an enemy to
God” (Mosiah 16:3-5).
The substantive portion of the
sermon (Alma 12:12—27) describes the judgment of God and tells how man can
avert a second death through obedience to a new set of commandments. According
to Alma's exposition, the fall of mankind was prefigured by Adam violating a
first set of commandments (Alma 12:22)…[1]
As Alma speaks, we need to pay close attention to his
words. He makes it clear the fall of
Adam was essential for all mankind to someday be saved and return to our Father
in Heaven.
Had Adam returned and ate of the fruit of the tree of life,
there would be no death and God would have been a liar when He said, “If thou eat thou shalt surely die.”
“Alma's inspired response implied that he recognized
Antionah's mixed motives in posing his questions. Alma asserted that the real
contradiction would have arisen if Adam and Eve had been able to partake of the
fruit of the tree of life immediately after their fall.”[2]
“Now
behold, [Corianton], I will explain this thing unto thee. For behold, after the Lord God sent our first
parents forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground, from whence they
were taken—yea, he drew out the man, and he placed at the east end of the
garden of Eden, cherubim, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep
the tree of life—Now, we see that the man had become as God, knowing good and
evil; and lest he should put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life,
and eat and live forever, the Lord God placed cherubim and the flaming sword,
that he should not partake of the fruit—And thus we see, that there was a time
granted unto man to repent, yea, a probationary time, a time to repent and
serve God. 5 For behold, if Adam had put
forth his hand immediately, and partaken of the tree of life, he would have
lived forever, according to the word of God, having no space for repentance;
yea, and also the word of God would have been void, and the great plan of
salvation would have been frustrated. But behold, it was appointed unto man to
die—therefore, as they were cut off from the tree of life they should be cut
off from the face of the earth—and man became lost forever, yea, they became
fallen man. And now, ye see by this that our first parents were cut off both
temporally and spiritually from the presence of the Lord; and thus we see they
became subjects to follow after their own will. Now behold, it was not
expedient that man should be reclaimed from this temporal death, for that would
destroy the great plan of happiness. Therefore, as the soul could never die,
and the fall had brought upon all mankind a spiritual death as well as a
temporal, that is, they were cut off from the presence of the Lord, it was
expedient that mankind should be reclaimed from this spiritual death” (Alma
42:2 - 9).
Alma makes it very clear life is a probationary state. It is given to us, Lehi tells us to prepare
to meet God. “And the days of the
children of amen were prolonged, according to the will of God, that
they might repent while in the flesh; wherefore, their state became a state of probation,
and their time was lengthened, according to the commandments which the Lord God
gave unto the children of men. For he
gave commandment that all men must repent; for he showed unto all men that they
were lost, because of the transgression of their parents” (2 Nephi 2:21).
Amulek taught, “For
behold, this life is the time for men to prepare to meet God; yea, behold the
day of this life is the day for men to perform their labors. And now, as I said
unto you before, as ye have had so many witnesses, therefore, I beseech of you
that ye do not procrastinate the day of your repentance until the end; for
after this day of life, which is given us to prepare for eternity, behold, if
we do not improve our time while in this life, then cometh the night of darkness
wherein there can be no labor performed. Ye cannot say, when ye are brought to
that awful crisis, that I will repent, that I will return to my God. Nay, ye cannot say this; for that same spirit
which doth possess your bodies at the time that ye go out of this life, that
same spirit will have power to possess your body in that eternal world. For
behold, if ye have procrastinated the day of your repentance even until death,
behold, ye have become subjected to the spirit of the devil, and he doth seal
you his; therefore, the Spirit of the Lord hath withdrawn from you, and hath no
place in you, and the devil hath all power over you; and this is the final
state of the wicked” (Alma 34:32-35).
Elder Russell L. Nelson taught, “Life does not begin with
birth, nor does it end with death. Prior to our birth, we dwelled as spirit
children with our Father in Heaven. There we eagerly anticipated the
possibility of coming to earth and obtaining a physical body. Knowingly we
wanted the risks of mortality, which would allow the exercise of agency and
accountability.”[3]
Elder Keith B. McMullin adds, “Heavenly Father knew the
grave dangers we would face on our journey through life, but He remains
resolute in His desire to have each and every one of His children return home.
Therefore, He gave us time—time to work out our mistakes, time to overcome our
sins, time to prepare for reunion.”[4]
