13 And then shall it
come to pass, that the spirits of the wicked, yea, who are evil—for behold,
they have no part nor portion of the Spirit of the Lord; for behold, they chose
evil works rather than good; therefore the spirit of the devil did enter into
them, and take possession of their house—and these shall be cast out into outer
darkness; there shall be weeping, and wailing, and gnashing of teeth, and this
because of their own iniquity, being led captive by the will of the devil.
14 Now this is the
state of the souls of the wicked, yea, in darkness, and a state of awful,
fearful looking for the fiery indignation of the wrath of God upon them; thus
they remain in this state, as well as the righteous in paradise, until the time
of their resurrection.
15 Now, there are some
that have understood that this state of happiness and this state of misery of
the soul, before the resurrection, was a first resurrection. Yea, I admit it
may be termed a resurrection, the raising of the spirit or the soul and their
consignation to happiness or misery, according to the words which have been
spoken.
16 And behold, again
it hath been spoken, that there is a first resurrection, a resurrection of all
those who have been, or who are, or who shall be, down to the resurrection of
Christ from the dead.
17 Now, we do not
suppose that this first resurrection, which is spoken of in this manner, can be
the resurrection of the souls and their consignation to happiness or misery. Ye
cannot suppose that this is what it meaneth.
18 Behold, I say unto
you, Nay; but it meaneth the reuniting of the soul with the body, of those from
the days of Adam down to the resurrection of Christ. (Alma 40:13-18)
After explaining what happens to the righteous after death,
Alma discusses the state of the wicked after they die.
The wicked have no part or portion of the Lord’s Spirit.
They chose evil instead of good. They devil’s spirit entered into them and took
possession of them.
“And this death of which I have spoken, which is the
spiritual death, shall deliver up its dead; which spiritual death is hell;
wherefore, death and hell must deliver up their dead, and hell must deliver up
its captive spirits, and the grave must deliver up its captive bodies, and the
bodies and the spirits of men will be restored one to the other; and it is by
the power of the resurrection of the Holy One of Israel” (2 Nephi 9:12).
At that time they will be cast into outer darkness.
“[T]he hour is coming, in the which all that are in the
graves shall hear his voice,
“And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the
resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of
damnation”[1]
(John 5:28-29).
“And if they will not repent and believe in his name, and be
baptized in his name, and endure to the end, they must be damned; for the Lord
God, the Holy One of Israel, has spoken it” (2 Nephi 9:24).
“For behold, there is a wo pronounced upon him who listeth
to obey that spirit; for if he listeth to obey him, and remaineth and dieth in
his sins, the same drinketh damnation to his own soul; for he receiveth for his
wages an everlasting punishment, having transgressed the law of God contrary to
his own knowledge” (Mosiah 2:33).
This will be done because they chose to do iniquity. “But
the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall
be weeping and gnashing of teeth” (Matthew 8:12).
“And then shall the wicked be cast out, and they shall have
cause to howl, and weep, and wail, and gnash their teeth; and this because they
would not hearken unto the voice of the Lord; therefore the Lord redeemeth them
not” (Mosiah 16:2).
This is what the wicked will face. “But unto the wicked he
did not go, and among the ungodly and the unrepentant who had defiled
themselves while in the flesh, his voice was not raised” (D&C 138:20).
They will be in an awful, fearful state. “I bid you
farewell, until I shall meet you before the pleasing bar of God, which bar
striketh the wicked with awful dread and fear” (Jacob 6:13).
“[O]ur father Adam taught these things … and many have
believed not, and have perished in their sins, and are looking forth with fear,
in torment, for the fiery indignation of the wrath of God to be poured out upon
them” (Moses 7:1).
They will also face the wrath of God. “God judgeth the
righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day” (Psalm 7:11).
“[H]e that believeth [GR disbelieves, disobeys, is
uncompliant to] not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on
him” (John 3:36).
“[B]ecause of the wickedness of the world, that I will take
vengeance upon the wicked, for they will not repent; for the cup of mine
indignation is full; for behold, my blood shall not cleanse them if they hear me
not” (D&C 29:17).
They will remain in this state until their resurrection. “Ye
cannot say, when ye are brought to that awful crisis, that I will repent, that
I will return to my God. Nay, ye cannot say this; for that same spirit which
doth possess your bodies at the time that ye go out of this life, that same
spirit will have power to possess your body in that eternal world” (Alma 34:34).
Some have understood this state of happiness or misery
before the resurrection was the first resurrection. He admits it may be called
a resurrection “a resurrection, the raising of the spirit or the soul and their
consignation to happiness or misery, according to the words which have been
spoken” (Alma 40:15).
It has been spoken there is a first resurrection. This will
be “a resurrection of all those who have been, or who are, or who shall be,
down to the resurrection of Christ from the dead” (Alma 40:16).
“Wherefore, beloved brethren, be reconciled unto him through
the atonement of Christ, his Only Begotten Son, and ye may obtain a
resurrection, according to the power of the resurrection which is in Christ,
and be presented as the first-fruits of Christ unto God, having faith, and
obtained a good hope of glory in him before he manifesteth himself in the flesh”
(Jacob 4:11).
“And there cometh a resurrection, even a first resurrection;
yea, even a resurrection of those that have been, and who are, and who shall
be, even until the resurrection of Christ—for so shall he be called” (Mosiah
15:21).
“[B]elieve in the Son of God, that he will come to redeem
his people, and that he shall suffer and die to atone for their sins; and that
he shall rise again from the dead, which shall bring to pass the resurrection,
that all men shall stand before him, to be judged at the last and judgment day,
according to their works” (Alma 33:22).
Alma tells Corianton the first resurrection is not “the
resurrection of the souls and their consignation to happiness or misery” (Alma
40:17).
“Speaking of the resurrection of the dead, concerning those
who shall hear the voice of the Son of Man:
“And shall come forth; they who have done good, in the
resurrection of the just; and they who have done evil, in the resurrection of
the unjust” (D&C 76:16-17).
“He shall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth,
that he may judge his people” (Psalm 50:4).
“God shall judge the righteous and the wicked: for there is
a time there for every purpose and for every work” (Ecclesiastes 3:17).
“But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set
at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of
Christ” (Romans 14:10).
What this means is “reuniting of the soul with the body, of
those from the days of Adam down to the resurrection of Christ” (Alma 40:18).
“And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints
which slept [GR who had died] arose” (Matthew 27:52).
