Alma 6

After Alma(2) finished preaching (Chapter 5), he ordained elders and priests to help with the ministry (Alma 6:1).  The work went forth.  Those that repented and were baptized became a part of the church.  Those that refused had their names removed (blotted out) and were no longer a part of the church.  (Alma 6:2-3).

Mormon breaks into his account and offers a brief explanation.  In verse 5, he wrote:

Now I would that ye should understand that the word of God was liberal unto all, that none were deprived of the privilege of assembling themselves together to hear the word of God.

Mormon tells us that all had the opportunity to hear the word and that freedom to assemble and hear the word of God is available to all.

The people met often and fasted and prayed for those who rejected the word of the Lord (verse 6).  The Lord offered many opportunities for the wicked to repent; they could never claim that they didn’t have real opportunities to repent.

Fasting is an important part of gaining the spirit.  There are a number of scriptures that point this out.

10  Again Esther spake unto Hatach, and gave him commandment unto Mordecai;
11  All the king's servants, and the people of the king's provinces, do know, that whosoever, whether man or woman, shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is one law of his to put him to death, except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden sceptre, that he may live: but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.
12  And they told to Mordecai Esther's words.
13  Then Mordecai commanded to answer Esther, Think not with thyself that thou shalt escape in the king's house, more than all the Jews.
14  For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father's house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?
15  Then Esther bade them return Mordecai this answer,
16  Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.
Esther 4:10-16 (Emphasis mine)

13  But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth: I humbled my soul with fasting; and my prayer returned into mine own bosom.
Psalms 35:13 (Emphasis mine)

18  Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting: neither were instruments of musick brought before him: and his sleep went from him.
19  Then the king arose very early in the morning, and went in haste unto the den of lions.
20  And when he came to the den, he cried with a lamentable voice unto Daniel: and the king spake and said to Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee from the lions?
21  Then said Daniel unto the king, O king, live for ever.
22  My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocence was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt.
23  Then was the king exceeding glad for him, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den.  So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him, because he believed in his God.

12  Therefore also now, saith the LORD, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning:
Joel 2:12 (Emphasis mine)

1  THEN was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
2  And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.
3  And [then] the tempter came to him …
Matthew 4:1-3 (Emphasis mine)

14  And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying,
15  Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water.
16  And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.
17  Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you?  how long shall I suffer you?  bring him hither to me.
18  And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.
19  Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out?
20  And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faithnothing shall be impossible unto you.
21  Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.
Matthew 17:14-21 (Emphasis mine)

30  And Cornelius said, Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and, behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing,
31  And said, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God.
Acts 10:30-31 (Emphasis mine)

“Brethren, I hope you noticed this morning, as President Hinckley prepared to announce the names of two new Apostles, he spoke of fasting and praying to know the Lord’s will.

“Fasting has always been a practice among God’s people. In our day it is a commandment given by the Lord to all members of the Church. In addition to occasional special fasts that we might have for personal or family reasons, we are expected to fast once a month on the first Sunday …

“I fear, brethren, that too many of us are either not fasting on fast day or we are doing so in a lackadaisical manner. If we are guilty of taking our fast day for granted … we are depriving ourselves and our families of the choice spiritual experiences and blessings that can come from a true fast.

“Throughout the scriptures the term fasting is usually combined with prayer … Fasting without prayer is just going hungry for 24 hours. But fasting combined with prayer brings increased spiritual power.” (Emphasis mine)

After Alma(2) took care of things in Zarahemla, he departed for Gideon to preach to the church there.  In the next post, we’ll review his teachings.
