Mormon addresses the descendants of the Lamanites as well as
the Gentiles who are concerned about the house of Israel. Those that do know
from where their blessings come.
These people will experience sorrow “for the calamity of the
house of Israel” (Mormon 5:11). They will also be saddened by the destruction
of the Nephites. This would have been prevented had they simply repented and
returned to Christ.
What would become the Book of Mormon was written for the
remnant of the house of Jacob. This fact is mentioned frequently in the Book of
Mormon. “Wherefore, I speak unto all the house of Israel, if it so be that they
should obtain these things” (1 Nephi 19:19).
“And I had faith, and I did cry unto God that he would
preserve the records; and he covenanted with me that he would bring them forth
unto the Lamanites in his own due time” (Enos 1:16).
“Yea, even if they should dwindle in unbelief the Lord shall
prolong their days, until the time shall come which hath been spoken of by our
fathers, and also by the prophet Zenos, and many other prophets, concerning the
restoration of our brethren, the Lamanites, again to the knowledge of the
truth—
“Yea, I say unto you, that in the latter times the promises
of the Lord have been extended to our brethren, the Lamanites; and
notwithstanding the many afflictions which they shall have, and notwithstanding
they shall be driven to and fro upon the face of the earth, and be hunted, and
shall be smitten and scattered abroad, having no place for refuge, the Lord shall
be merciful unto them.
“And this is according to the prophecy, that they shall
again be brought to the true knowledge, which is the knowledge of their
Redeemer, and their great and true shepherd, and be numbered among his sheep”
(Helaman 15:11-13).
The record will be hidden until the Lord sees fit to have it
translated and available to all of us. “Wherefore, they are of worth unto the
children of men, and he that supposeth that they are not, unto them will I
speak particularly, and confine the words unto mine own people; for I know that
they shall be of great worth unto them in the last days; for in that day shall
they understand them; wherefore, for their good have I written them” (2 Nephi
25:8).
“And it shall come to pass that the Lord God shall bring forth
unto you the words of a book, and they shall be the words of them which have
slumbered” (2 Nephi 27:6).
“And as these plates are small, and as these things are
written for the intent of the benefit of our brethren the Lamanites, wherefore,
it must needs be that I write a little; but I shall not write the things of my
prophesying, nor of my revelations. For what could I write more than my fathers
have written? For have not they revealed the plan of salvation? I say unto you,
Yea; and this sufficeth me” (Jarom 1:2).
Lehi foresaw the day when the Book of Mormon will come
forth. “And the Lord said unto me also: I will raise up unto the fruit of thy
loins; and I will make for him a spokesman. And I, behold, I will give unto him
that he shall write the writing of the fruit of thy loins, unto the fruit of
thy loins; and the spokesman of thy loins shall declare it” (2 Nephi 3:18).
