16 I say unto you, can
you imagine to yourselves that ye hear the voice of the Lord, saying unto you,
in that day: Come unto me ye blessed, for behold, your works have been the
works of righteousness upon the face of the earth?
17 Or do ye imagine to
yourselves that ye can lie unto the Lord in that day, and say—Lord, our works
have been righteous works upon the face of the earth—and that he will save you?
18 Or otherwise, can
ye imagine yourselves brought before the tribunal of God with your souls filled
with guilt and remorse, having a remembrance of all your guilt, yea, a perfect
remembrance of all your wickedness, yea, a remembrance that ye have set at
defiance the commandments of God?
19 I say unto you, can
ye look up to God at that day with a pure heart and clean hands? I say unto
you, can you look up, having the image of God engraven upon your countenances?
20 I say unto you, can
ye think of being saved when you have yielded yourselves to become subjects to
the devil?
21 I say unto you, ye
will know at that day that ye cannot be saved; for there can no man be saved
except his garments are washed white; yea, his garments must be purified until
they are cleansed from all stain, through the blood of him of whom it has been
spoken by our fathers, who should come to redeem his people from their sins.
22 And now I ask of
you, my brethren, how will any of you feel, if ye shall stand before the bar of
God, having your garments stained with blood and all manner of filthiness?
Behold, what will these things testify against you?
23 Behold will they
not testify that ye are murderers, yea, and also that ye are guilty of all
manner of wickedness? (Alma 5:16-23).
Alma continues to ask people to consider answer to questions
he asks.
·
Can you imagine to yourselves that ye hear the
voice of the Lord, saying unto you, in that day: Come unto me ye blessed, for
behold, your works have been the works of righteousness upon the face of the
earth?
In the parable of the sheep and the goats, Jesus told the
people,
“For I was an
hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a
stranger, and ye took me in:
“Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited [GR
took care of, cared for] me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.
“Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw
we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?
“When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked,
and clothed thee?
“Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?”
“And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say
unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my
brethren, ye have done it unto me” (Matthew 25:35-40).
Then, Jesus told them, “Come, ye blessed of my Father,
inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world” (Matthew
25:34). These are the words Alma referred to when he asked them to imagine the
voice of the Lord and the words He speaks to those who have been righteous and
obeyed His commandments.
·
Do ye imagine to yourselves that ye can lie unto
the Lord in that day, and say—Lord, our works have been righteous works upon
the face of the earth—and that he will save you?
It is not uncommon for those who have sinned to find ways to
rationalize their behavior. The Lord made it clear this will do them no good.
“Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter
into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father who is in
heaven.
“Many will say to me in that day: Lord, Lord, have we not
prophesied in thy name, and in thy name have cast out devils, and in thy name
done many wonderful works?
“And then will I profess unto them: I never knew you; depart
from me, ye that work iniquity” (3 Nephi 14:21-23).
·
Can ye imagine yourselves brought before the
tribunal of God with your souls filled with guilt and remorse, having a
remembrance of all your guilt, yea, a perfect remembrance of all your
wickedness, yea, a remembrance that ye have set at defiance the commandments of
God?
Scriptures make it clear that, even if we delude ourselves
during this life, in the end, we will know our guilt.
“And there shall ye remember your ways, and all your doings,
wherein ye have been defiled; and ye shall lothe yourselves in your own sight
for all your evils that ye have committed” (Ezekiel 20:43).
“Wherefore, we shall have a perfect knowledge of all our
guilt, and our uncleanness, and our nakedness; and the righteous shall have a
perfect knowledge of their enjoyment, and their righteousness, being clothed
with purity, yea, even with the robe of righteousness” (2 Nephi 9:14).
“O, all ye old men, and also ye young men, and you little
children who can understand my words, for I have spoken plainly unto you that
ye might understand, I pray that ye should awake to a remembrance of the awful
situation of those that have fallen into transgression” (Mosiah 2:40).
“And if they be evil they are consigned to an awful view of
their own guilt and abominations, which doth cause them to shrink from the
presence of the Lord into a state of misery and endless torment, from whence
they can no more return; therefore they have drunk damnation to their own souls”
(Mosiah 3:25).
“The spirit and the body shall be reunited again in its
perfect form; both limb and joint shall be restored to its proper frame, even
as we now are at this time; and we shall be brought to stand before God,
knowing even as we know now, and have a bright recollection of all our guilt” (Alma
11:43).
“Although your spirit had a veil of forgetfulness placed
over it at the time of your birth into mortality, it retained its power to
remember all that happens—precisely recording each event of life. Indeed,
scriptures warn ‘that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give
account thereof in the day of judgment.’ (Matt. 12:36.) Prophets refer to our ‘bright
recollection (Alma 11:43) and “perfect remembrance” (Alma 5:18) at that day of
decision.”[1]
·
Can ye look up to God at that day with a pure heart
and clean hands? I say unto you, can you look up, having the image of God
engraven upon your countenances?
“Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon
us, that we should be called the sons [GR children, people] of God: therefore
the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
“Beloved, now are we the sons [GR children, people] of God,
and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall
appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
“And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself,
even as he is pure” (1 John 3:1-3).
“Some murmurers seem to hope to reshape the Church to their
liking by virtue of their murmuring. But why would one want to belong to a
church that he could remake in his own image, when it is the Lord’s image that
we should come to have in our countenances? (See Alma 5:19.) The doctrines are
His, brothers and sisters, not ours. The power is His to delegate, not ours to
manipulate! (Ensign, November 1989, 83, as quoted in The Neal A. Maxwell Quote
Book, ed. Cory H. Maxwell [Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1997], 69.)”[2]
·
Can ye think of being saved when you have
yielded yourselves to become subjects to the devil?
If we have allowed ourselves to be subject to the devil,
there is no way we can be saved. We had our choices, and, those who chose evil,
will now reap the consequences of their choices.
“But, O my people, beware lest there shall arise contentions
among you, and ye list to obey the evil spirit, which was spoken of by my
father Mosiah” (Mosiah 2:32).
·
Ye will know at that day that ye cannot be
saved; for there can no man be saved except his garments are washed white; yea,
his garments must be purified until they are cleansed from all stain, through
the blood of him of whom it has been spoken by our fathers, who should come to
redeem his people from their sins.
The only way we can be saved is if our garments are washed white
through Christ’s blood shed in Gethsemane.
“And these twelve ministers whom thou beholdest shall judge
thy seed. And, behold, they are righteous forever; for because of their faith
in the Lamb of God their garments are made white in his blood” (1 Nephi
12:10).
“Therefore they were called after this holy order, and were
sanctified, and their garments were washed white through the blood of the Lamb.
“Now they, after being sanctified by the Holy Ghost, having
their garments made white, being pure and spotless before God, could not look
upon sin save it were with abhorrence; and there were many, exceedingly great
many, who were made pure and entered into the rest of the Lord their God.
“And now, my brethren, I would that ye should humble
yourselves before God, and bring forth fruit meet for repentance, that ye may
also enter into that rest” (Alma 13:11-13).
“And no unclean thing can enter into his kingdom; therefore
nothing entereth into his rest save it be those who have washed their garments
in my blood, because of their faith, and the repentance of all their sins, and
their faithfulness unto the end.
“Now this is the commandment: Repent, all ye ends of the
earth, and come unto me and be baptized in my name, that ye may be sanctified
by the reception of the Holy Ghost, that ye may stand spotless before me at the
last day” (3 Nephi 27:19-20).
Our garments will be purified and cleansed from all stains
as we repent.
“The dead who repent will be redeemed, through obedience to
the ordinances of the house of God,
“And after they have paid the penalty of their
transgressions, and are washed clean, shall receive a reward according to their
works, for they are heirs of salvation” (D&C 138:58-59).
·
How will any of you feel, if ye shall stand
before the bar of God, having your garments stained with blood and all manner
of filthiness? Behold, what will these things testify against you?
“For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers
with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered
perverseness” (Isaiah 59:3).
“There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and
yet is not washed from their filthiness” (Proverbs 30:12).
“Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us
cleanse ourselves from all filthiness [GR pollution, stain, defilement] of the
flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God” (2 Corinthians
7:1).
“He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is
filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous
still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still” (Revelation 22:11).
“That which breaketh a law, and abideth not by law, but
seeketh to become a law unto itself, and willeth to abide in sin, and
altogether abideth in sin, cannot be sanctified by law, neither by mercy,
justice, nor judgment. Therefore, they must remain filthy still” (D&C 88:35).
·
Will they not testify that ye are murderers,
yea, and also that ye are guilty of all manner of wickedness?
“For our transgressions are multiplied before thee, and our
sins testify against us: for our transgressions are with us; and as for our
iniquities, we know them” (Isaiah 59:12).
