44 For I am called to
speak after this manner, according to the holy order of God, which is in Christ
Jesus; yea, I am commanded to stand and testify unto this people the things
which have been spoken by our fathers concerning the things which are to come.
45 And this is not
all. Do ye not suppose that I know of these things myself? Behold, I testify
unto you that I do know that these things whereof I have spoken are true. And
how do ye suppose that I know of their surety?
46 Behold, I say unto
you they are made known unto me by the Holy Spirit of God. Behold, I have
fasted and prayed many days that I might know these things of myself. And now I
do know of myself that they are true; for the Lord God hath made them manifest
unto me by his Holy Spirit; and this is the spirit of revelation which is in
me.
47 And moreover, I say
unto you that it has thus been revealed unto me, that the words which have been
spoken by our fathers are true, even so according to the spirit of prophecy
which is in me, which is also by the manifestation of the Spirit of God.
48 I say unto you,
that I know of myself that whatsoever I shall say unto you, concerning that
which is to come, is true; and I say unto you, that I know that Jesus Christ
shall come, yea, the Son, the Only Begotten of the Father, full of grace, and
mercy, and truth. And behold, it is he that cometh to take away the sins of the
world, yea, the sins of every man who steadfastly believeth on his name.
49 And now I say unto
you that this is the order after which I am called, yea, to preach unto my
beloved brethren, yea, and every one that dwelleth in the land; yea, to preach
unto all, both old and young, both bond and free; yea, I say unto you the aged,
and also the middle aged, and the rising generation; yea, to cry unto them that
they must repent and be born again. (Alma 5:44-49).
Alma tells them, as the high priest over the church, he has
been given the authority to preach to them. “And it came to pass that Alma was
appointed to be the first chief judge, he being also the high priest, his
father having conferred the office upon him, and having given him the charge
concerning all the affairs of the church” (Mosiah 29:42).
He was commanded to testify of the thing which he has spoken
and which will come. “Do ye not suppose that I know of these things myself,”
Alma asks. He testifies as to the truthfulness of his words.
Alma would later testify to his son, Helaman, “And I would
not that ye think that I know of myself—not of the temporal but of the
spiritual, not of the carnal mind but of God” (Alma 36:4).
“To receive knowledge from the Holy Ghost, we must ask
Heavenly Father for it. We must trust that God loves us and that He will help
us to recognize the promptings of the Holy Ghost.”[1]
He learned these truths through the “Holy Spirit of God.”
“But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard,
neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared
for them that love him.
“But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the
Spirit searcheth [GR explored, investigates] all things, yea, the deep things
of God.
“For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit
of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the
Spirit of God [JST 1 Cor. 2:11 … except he has the Spirit of God.]” (1 Corinthians
2:9-11).
He fasted and prayed many days to know the truth of these
things. These things were made manifest to him through the Holy Spirit and that
is his spirit of revelation.
Alma teaches them the day will come when Christ will be
born, “the Son of the Only Begotten of the Father, full of grace, and mercy,
and truth” (Alma 5:48). He will take away the sins of all who believe on His
name.
It is his duty to preach to all who live in the land. His
message is they must repent and be born again.
“Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say
unto thee, Except a man be born again [GR from above, anew], he cannot see the
kingdom of God” (John 3:3).
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature:
old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (2 Corinthians
5:17).
“If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one
that doeth righteousness is born of him” (1 John 2:29).
“And now, because of the covenant which ye have made ye
shall be called the children of Christ, his sons, and his daughters; for
behold, this day he hath spiritually begotten you; for ye say that your hearts
are changed through faith on his name; therefore, ye are born of him and have
become his sons and his daughters” (Mosiah 5:7).
“What can a deacon, teacher, or priest do to receive the
spirit of revelation and magnify his calling? He can live so as to enjoy the
cleansing, sanctifying, and illuminating power of the Holy Ghost.
“The importance of this is found in these words from Alma:
“Now I say unto you that this is the order after which I am called, … to preach
unto … the rising generation … that they must repent and be born again.” When
one is born again, his heart is changed. He has no appetite for things evil or
unclean. He feels a deep and abiding love for God. He wants to be good, to
serve others, and to keep the commandments.”[2]
