The commandments of
Alma to his son Helaman.
Comprising
chapters 36 and 37.
Chapter 36
Alma testifies to
Helaman of his conversion after seeing an angel—He suffered the pains of a
damned soul; he called upon the name of Jesus, and was then born of God—Sweet
joy filled his soul—He saw concourses of angels praising God—Many converts have
tasted and seen as he has tasted and seen. About 74 B.C.
1 My son, give ear to
my words; for I swear unto you, that inasmuch as ye shall keep the commandments
of God ye shall prosper in the land.
2 I would that ye
should do as I have done, in remembering the captivity of our fathers; for they
were in bondage, and none could deliver them except it was the God of Abraham,
and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob; and he surely did deliver them in
their afflictions.
3 And now, O my son
Helaman, behold, thou art in thy youth, and therefore, I beseech of thee that
thou wilt hear my words and learn of me; for I do know that whosoever shall put
their trust in God shall be supported in their trials, and their troubles, and
their afflictions, and shall be lifted up at the last day.
4 And I would not that
ye think that I know of myself—not of the temporal but of the spiritual, not of
the carnal mind but of God. (Alma 36:1-4)
Alma begins talking to Helaman, telling him if he kept the
commandments, he would prosper in the land.
He told him to remember the captivity of their fathers. They
were in bondage, but only the Lord cold deliver them. “And the Lord brought us
forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand, and with an outstretched arm, and with
great terribleness, and with signs, and with wonders” (Deuteronomy 26:8).
He may well have also been referring to the bondage his
father and his people bondage under Amulon. “For behold, I will show unto you
that they were brought into bondage, and none could deliver them but the Lord
their God, yea, even the God of Abraham and Isaac and of Jacob” (Mosiah 23:23).
“And he said unto Alma: Thou shalt go before this people,
and I will go with thee and deliver this people out of bondage” (Mosiah 24:17).
“Yea, and I also remember the captivity of my fathers; for I
surely do know that the Lord did deliver them out of bondage, and by this did
establish his church; yea, the Lord God, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac,
and the God of Jacob, did deliver them out of bondage” (Alma 29:11).
He tells him to listen to his words. Whoever puts their
trust in God will “be supported in their trials, and their troubles, and their
afflictions, and shall be lifted up at the last day” (Alma 36:3).
“Blessed are all they that put their trust in him” (Psalm
2:12).
“And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee:
for thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them that seek thee” (Psalm 9:10).
“Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart
before him: God is a refuge for us” (Psalm 62:8).
“The righteous shall be glad in the Lord, and shall trust in
him; and all the upright in heart shall glory” (Psalm 64:10).
“O Lord, I have trusted in thee, and I will trust in thee
forever. I will not put my trust in the arm of flesh; for I know that cursed is
he that putteth his trust in the arm of flesh. Yea, cursed is he that putteth
his trust in man or maketh flesh his arm” (2 Nephi 4:34).
“And we know that all things work together for good to them
that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose” (Romans
8:28).
“Nevertheless the Lord seeth fit to chasten his people; yea,
he trieth their patience and their faith.
“Nevertheless—whosoever putteth his trust in him the same
shall be lifted up at the last day. Yea, and thus it was with this people” (Mosiah
23:21-22).
“But much that happens to us in this life we cannot control;
we only respond. Knowing what God has promised can provide the courage and
faith we need. We are assured in the scriptures that we may know of a surety
that the Lord does visit his people in their afflictions. And that ‘whosoever
shall put their trust in God shall be supported in their trials, and their
troubles, and their afflictions, and shall be lifted up at the last day’ (Alma
36:3).”[1]
Alma tells Helaman he knows these things, not of the temporal
but the spiritual. “For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit
of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the
Spirit of God” (1 Corinthians 2:11).[2]
“And this is not all. Do ye not suppose that I know of these
things myself? Behold, I testify unto you that I do know that these things whereof
I have spoken are true. And how do ye suppose that I know of their surety?
“Behold, I say unto you they are made known unto me by the
Holy Spirit of God. Behold, I have fasted and prayed many days that I might
know these things of myself. And now I do know of myself that they are true;
for the Lord God hath made them manifest unto me by his Holy Spirit; and this
is the spirit of revelation which is in me” (Alma 5:45-46).

spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, except
he has Spirit of God” (JST 1 Corinthians 2:11).
